Baseball Cocktails

Get ready for postseason with a libation or two

Cracker jacks, hot dogs, 10 oz. beers. The crack of the bat and the strong gust of wind you feel when sitting up in the nosebleed section of your favorite team’s home stadium. These fantastic things are just some of the treats that one gets to enjoy at a baseball game. With the changing of seasons from summer to fall, so comes a much bigger change, the change from regular season baseball to postseason baseball.

There is a real appeal to baseball in the trekking out to the home team’s field, sitting in whatever seats are available and watching one of America’s favorite pastimes. And although the traditional beverage of choice at a baseball game may be an ice cold beer, why not get creative and enjoy a cocktail or two in support of your favorite team?

Let’s Hear It For The Red White and Blue-Washington Nationals

3 oz Stolichnaya Vodka
1 oz Stolichnaya Blueberi Vodka
½ oz Grenadine
Club Soda
2-3 blueberries

Combine first three ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and pour into a highball glass with fresh ice. Top with club soda. Garnish with blueberries. Can’t you feel the spirit of D.C. already?

The Incumbent-San Francisco Giants

3 oz Pimm’s No.1
1 oz gin
1 oz ginger ale
½ oz lemon juice
Sprig of fresh mint

Muddle the mint in a cocktail shaker. Combine the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. Pour into a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig. The Pimm’s Cup is on the rise in San Francisco, so how better to celebrate the team than with a twist on a hometown favorite?

Orange Bird Is The Word-Baltimore Orioles

1 can National Bohemian Beer (also known as Natty Boh)
½ cup tomato juice
1 oz Worcestershire sauce
½ oz soy sauce
½ oz hot sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Old Bay Seasoning
Lump crab meat
Lemon juice

Rim a highball glass with lemon juice, then dip into the old bay seasoning for a spicy rim. Fill the glass with ice and combine the beer, tomato juice, sauces and spices. Stir well and squeeze in some of the remaining lemon juice. Garnish with a piece of lump crab meat on a toothpick. This drink pays some serious homage to Baltimore!

Manhattan-New York Yankees

2 oz Hudson Valley Baby Bourbon Whiskey
½ oz sweet vermouth
1 dash Angostura Bitters
Maraschino cherries
Orange twist

Combine the whiskey and vermouth in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Stir until well combined and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a dash of bitters, two maraschino cherries and a twist of orange. This can also be enjoyed over ice in a rocks glass.

The Yankees are iconic of New York, so they deserve a classic drink.

Mr. Red Legs-The Cincinnati Reds

3 oz Bacon-infused Bourbon**
2 oz Lemonade
1/2 oz Agave syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Orange twist

Combine the bourbon, lemonade and agave syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with bitters and a twist of orange.

This drink shows off just a few of the fantastic elements that Cincinatti has to offer. Not only is it right across the river from Kentucky, home of some fantastic bourbon, but it is also famous for Skyline chili; a rich and meaty chili that is easy to love.

**Bacon-infused Bourbon:

Fry 5-7 strips of bacon in a skillet on medium-high heat. Remove the bacon from the pan and save the rendered fat. Pour bourbon into a plastic container, and strain the bacon fat from the pan into the container. Let it infuse for 4-6 hours at room temperature, then put into the freezer until the fat has solidified. Remove the container from the freezer and remove the fat. Strain the liquid again into a new container.

Neat list, Sara, but I hope you've realized that the Giants did not win the last World Series; the Cardinals did. Maybe you could add Budweiser as a 6th entry for those sophisticated Cards fans.
