Autumn Spice Cocktails: Thanksgiving Edition

A silky, pumpkin nog-tail


Can’t you hear it? The final days of the 2011 calendar year are upon us. The cyclical clock is tick, tick, ticking away towards new beginnings, clean slates and all the fresh possibility imaginable. To many, it is the best time of year. Change is on the proverbial doorstep.

But before that door is opened, we must give thanks for all our year’s blessings. We must share a hearty meal with those we love. We must pay homage to our earth, to mother nature and to all those that came before us. We must celebrate Thanksgiving, the heart of our holiday season.

When The Great Pumpkin Comes is a suitably sweet cocktail. Silky pumpkin is pureed and flavored with India’s Cardamom, creating a decadent libation that soothes the soul. The egg whites, thyme, marzipan and citrus fuse together to add balance and structure. This hearty drink is perfect to share.
As Charlie Brown would say, “happiness is anyone and anything that’s loved by you.”

When The Great Pumpkin Comes

Serving Size: 1

1 ¾ oz Bulleit or Buffalo Trace Bourbon
1/8 oz St. Elizabeth All Spice Dram
2 sprigs of thyme, leaves only
2 tbsp pumpkin spice puree
1 egg, whites only
½ oz marzipan syrup (2 cups water, 5 oz marzipan paste, 1/8 cup sugar, melted into milky syrup)
½ oz fresh squeeze lemon juice

Place liquor, thyme, pumpkin, lemon, marzipan syrup and egg white into shaker and shake vigorously for 20 seconds without ice. Add ice and shake again for another 15 seconds. Fine strain into a coup glass and serve as is.

Pumpkin Spice Puree

1 14.5oz can pumpkin puree
1 ½ cups water
1 cup white granulated sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
½ tsp vanilla extract
¼ tsp ground cardamom
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
¼ tsp ground, dried ginger
1 tsp molasses (optional)

Place all ingredients into a saucepan over medium heat and stir. Let simmer for approximately 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stores best refrigerated in sterilized Mason jar.
