As to be expected, this is generally a lineup of rather structured and bright, yet rich wines from around the country. The list is by no means comprehensive, but it is indicative of the quality and style of wine that Austria represents. These were quite well made, generally all having fresh fruit and mineral flavors supported by formidable acidity. I can’t deny loving this style, though I do wish the wines were less aggressively priced.
Having been to Austria and having seen the vineyards, I understand why we’re looking at $30 wines. You’d have to pay me a boatload to help with harvest in those rugged vineyards! But it’s just that those rugged land that lends these wines such great character. They’re not for every day, that’s for sure, but you owe it to yourself to try a great Austrian Riesling someday. And make that someday soon!
