6 Malbecs Reviewed 2007 Seven Hills Walla Walla Valley Malbec 13.8%

Lovely aromas of violet, juniper and faint hints of rosemary emerge early on, to be joined by a nice underlay of wood spice and some juicy sour plum and wild blueberry tones with a streak of vanilla undertone. This is deliciously aromatic with a fine layering of fruit and forest aromas. This starts off on the palate with that wild blueberry note from the nose and just displays excellent cut and definition. The acidity is vibrant but well integrated and the tannins super-fine but present enough to lend this some firmness. The fruit is sapid and rich in the mouth, very deftly accented by the oak treatment, allowing the wild plum and slightly grapy/blackberry quality to linger on the moderately long finish. Really fresh, bright and juicy in the mouth. 91pts

  • It is a joke to say Walla Walla Malbec is the best Malbec you can find

If you want to know about Malbec buy the book:

Wines of Passion: The Best of South America

It gives the best Malbecs blind tasted and no bs

You may plant Malbec whereever you wish but only Argentine Malbecs are great. Period

What did you think of the Seven Hills Malbec?

Your last sentence is far too revealing.

  • By far the best Malbec I have ever had came from Paso Robles! James Judd and Son and Cellar Full of Noise are worth a look- if you can't find it, check out J & J Cellars and ask for it!

  • Piattelli Grand Reserve Malbec - may not be in the class of what you have reviewed, but I can't get enough of this stuff. Try it!

Recently purchased Layer Cake Malbec at a Sam's Club in Las Vegas and was disappointed with the result. Have had and enjoyed Malbec but this version was not to our liking due to overriding tannin and bitter taste.

  • I just tasted the seven hills Malbec after the owner sent me a bottle.

It is very pleasant but very long in oak(18 months) which removes any real individuality that the grape may have had. It is totally different from a Malbec from Argentina to the point that they really have nothing in common other than being made with red grapes.

That being said, I believe it has an appeal much like a Merlot may have. So it is not a bad wine, a good wine in fact, just nothing like a real Malbec.

Your article today on Argentine Malbecs is excellent!

Try Los Colores del Sol and Trapiche Broquel 2006, 07, or 08...still inexpensive but excellent Malbecs.
