Of course like with all other varieties, or so it seems, Mondeuse made its way to obscurity in California though there is a notable exception, the version produced by Syrah specialist and certified wine geeks Stephen Lagier and Carole Meredith at their eponymous winery. Where my favorite versions from the Savoy tend to be like the smooth, fruity, but not frooty Domaine Jean Vullien Mondeuse St Jean de la Porte with its lovely savory hints, the Lagier Meredith takes things up a notch or three. In fact it goes to 11 with its intensity of Syrah-like fruit, somewhat chewy texture and attractive savory complexity. The resemblance to Syrah is not accidental as Mondeuse is thought to be either a half sibling or grandparent of Syrah.
