2009 Dolcettos

Snooth Vintage of the Year

I have opted for a vintage and a grape that is remarkably readily available, with wines that are almost all truly affordable and that are drinking well today and over the next two to five years. These are wines we can all afford to buy, and enjoy! These were, as a group, remarkable wine. I have never before tasted through a vintage of Dolcetto so crisp, balanced, and focused as these wines.

2009 Guido Porro Dolcetto

Hugely aromatic on the nose with scents of men’s cologne and savory, dark, muscular fruit. In the mouth this is packed with sweet, dark fruits that extend over the lush mid-palate, revealing spice tones and vividly pure earthy fruit as the wine transitions to the long, crisp and yet velvety finish. This has all sorts of things going on in the mouth, from a slight geranium note to hints of cocoa dust and plum skins all presented in a seamless package. 92pts

2009 Luigi Pira Dolcetto

Spicy on the nose with lively dark fruit and layers of nuance from violets to meat tones and talcy earth. Great acids on entry lead to a palate that offers up intense, sweet-toned black raspberry fruit supported by slightly astringent tannins. This is really very focused with great drive in the mouth to a long plum, berry and earthy finish that ends with a touch of spicy, mouth-grabbing tannins. 91pts

2009 Elio Grasso Dolcetto d’Alba

This has intense aromas of black raspberry and cherry on the nose with just a hint of underlying tobacco and spice. In the mouth it is finely balanced with rich black cherry fruit and taut, almost mineral fine tannins that give this unusual tension in the mouth considering the wine’s size. It’s a big wine yet wonderfully bright and fresh with a long, freshly fruited yet sapid finish. 91pts

2009 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Dolcetto di Dogliani

This is deep and rich on the nose with fresh notes of wild berry fruits and wonderfully spicy accents. Bursting with fruit in the mouth, and well endowed with almost burly tannins and mouthwatering acidity that allows this to carry the weight of all this intensely rich black plum and blackberry fruit effortlessly. The finish shows a bit of bitter cocoa and the trademark bitter almond hint of Dolcetto, as well as emerging notes of forest floor, licorice and tarry medicinal herbs. 91pts

2009 Brezza Dolcetto Fossati

Clear and crisp on the nose with some slate notes; lots of oily, almost bitter herbs; a hint of tomato leaf and rich plummy fruit. This is much like the nose on entry with a vibrant clarity and very well balanced, with some brittle tannins supporting lovely, pure, very wild raspberry fruit that is bright and juicy. This is a very zesty Dolcetto with a light, long, raspberry and grape seed finish. 90pts

2009 Burlotto Dolcetto

This is a bit reticent on the nose with a dusty mineral character and gentle herbal suggestions floating above the taut blackberry fruit. In the mouth this has laser focus for Dolcetto, with the acidity corralling the fruit and driving the black, lightly spicy fruit into a long finish that shows a gentle herbal top note on the finale. 90pts
