As I mentioned before, Burgundy is a core element of the wine list here. While prices are impressive, even here one can find a value. If Pinot Noir is what you seek, there are several very attractive and well thought out domestic selections that fall comfortably within my budget.

Jean-Michel Gaunoux, Les Perrières  2006 $95
Brick House, Cuvée du Tonnelier 2009 $95
Evening Land 2009 Seven Springs Vineyard $80
Belle Pente Murto 2008 $95
Shea Estate 2009 $95

If one wants to change speed and look towards Italy for choices, there is a great list of Barolo to choose from with most of my favorite producers. Of course these wines are expensive, but there are a handful of wonderful Nebbiolo on the list in our price range.

Bovio, Vigna Arborina 1998 $105
Bovio, Vigna Gattera 1999 $105
Oddero, La Morra 1996 $110
Antoniolo, Vigneto Castelle 2001 $105
Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema 2005 $45

Some of the best values on the list are among the least expensive selections. For a restaurant like Eleven Madison Park to be offering such compelling wines at $75 or less is proof that they want to remain accessible to all diners. These three wines are all terrific, though the Rioja is not only a steal but a knockout wine as well.

Gigondas Domaine du Cayron 2008 $75
La Rioja Alta, Viña Ardanza, Reserva 2001 $75
Montevertine, Pian del Ciampolo 2007 $65

Obviously there are many great choices on the list, but patience and an alert set of eyes can be rewarding indeed. Of all the wines on the list, though the Viña Ardanza comes close, none jump out at me like the small listing under Cabernet Franc, Saumur-Champigny in particular. This group of wines from Clos Rougeard are not only well priced, but are absolutely fabulous and not easily found, making these my no-brainer wine choices from Eleven Madison Park.

Clos Rougeard 2005 $125
Clos Rougeard 2006 $115
Clos Rougeard, Les Poyeux 2005 $165
Clos Rougeard, Les Poyeux 2006 $145

While close to, or over, my self-imposed budgetary limit, these wines rock and are superbly food friendly. Jackpot. I am a little surprised that I had never noticed these on my past visits to Eleven Madison Park, but I know what I'll be drinking on my next visit. Now to make the reservation!

I can't wait for my next visit. Now that I've examined the list with a clear mind and a specific goal, I've uncovered many wines I might have passed over on earlier visits. These wines were well chosen, incredibly well priced, and exciting to try. The goals of a great wine list, met and exceeded.
