11 Great Reds from a Historic Napa District We've had a great month of tasting Cabernet here at Snooth, and we've saved the best for last. Napa Valley has a reputation for producing some of the best Cabernets around. While that might be true, the bigger truth is that Napa Valley is a pretty complex place with distinct terroirs which allow for a number of styles of wines to be produced.

The Stags Leap District is famous for it's lush, ripe, opulent but supple style, one that has found great favor among many wine drinkers, and rightly so. These are wines that are exceptionally approachable in their youth, though they do age well. This relatively long drinking window, along with that supple style, makes these wines ideal for the average consumer. They are wines that will drink well off restaurant wine lists or retail shelves, meaning you don't have to wait to get to know some of the best of Napa Valley. In our fast paced world that seems to be a distinct advantage!

  • Lots of great advice here. And, give yourself some credit. Even Jancis Robinson says she can't recognize more than 4 or 5 descriptors. I find it wearisome when wine writers offer a fruit bowl of specific descriptors without giving us the big picture: light, medium, full bodied, massive. Typical of the variety/region or no. High octane or reasonable. How much oak... Stuff like that that helps us know what we're buying. I'm also tired of off the wall descriptors that don't have any meaning for most consumers - "sweet woodruff"? Please...

  • Agreed on the 2007 Malk Cabernet. Best I have ever had. After tasting I ordered a case and found that the highlight of my day each day was my glass or two of 2007 Malk Cab every evening. Amazing how fast that case went!
