My final stop in New Zealand was Hawkes Bay, New Zealand’s “big reds” region. Produced from Syrah and Bordeaux varieties, these wines are rich and powerful but at their best retain a clarity and finesse that sets them apart from other New World regions working with these grapes. Case in point: Te Mata. Their Awatea blend of Cabernet and Merlot was a real stand out for me. Fresh and precise with rich fruit and rounded yet firm tannins, it is transparent enough to reveal its deep soil tones. When I checked to see what this sells for here in the states, I was happily surprised to see it going for just over $30 a bottle, a real value. It’s too bad that we don’t get some of their Sauvignon Blanc as well as it was lovely and almost salty with a fine balance of nettle, citrus and mineral flavors. Hopefully, that will change in the future!
